MALAYSIA URGES RUSSIA TO SHARE TECHNOLOGICAL KNOW-HOW WITH ASEAN

By Ahmad Fuad Yahya

NUSA DUA (BALI), July 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has urged Russia to share its technological know-how and advancements in the field of energy, especially in gas and the peaceful use of nuclear energy technology, with Asean member countries.

The call was made during the Post-Ministerial Meeting of Asean Plus One with Russia here on Friday.

"We believe that Russian expertise and technology know-how in both nuclear power generation as well as on the non-power applications of nuclear technology could be of great assistance to Asean, especially in the areas of human capital development and capacity building through attachment or on-the-job training in Russian universities and other relevant organisations," Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said.

In a statement released here Sunday, Anifah said Malaysia had also noted with satisfaction that the adopted Plan of Action on Science and Technology for 2007 to 2011 contributed to the enhancement of the cooperation between Asean and Russia.

This included technology transfer and exchange among officials, scientists and researchers, he said.

"As the Plan of Action will end this year, Malaysia hopes that a new Plan of Action on Science and Technology could be developed to further deepen the cooperation in the years ahead," he said.

The meeting was co-chaired by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov.

The meeting mainly reviewed the progress of Asean-Russia cooperation and explored new areas of cooperation. Russia supported the efforts of Asean Community building and Asean Connectivity.

"The Asean ministers welcomed Russia's participation in the East Asia Summit and the meeting agreed to undertake activities to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Asean-Russia dialogue partnership this year," he said.

Anifah said the ministers also appreciated Russia's commitment to the agreements to pursue the Asean-Russia goals in the cooperation for peace and stability in the two regions.

The meeting also discussed Asean-Russia cooperation in the area of counter terrorism and transnational crimes and cooperation in the fields of food and energy security.
