CALL FOR EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS TO MANAGE HEALTH AT THE WORKPLACE

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama) - Nurses and hotel housekeepers are among
workers who are prone to musculoskeletal disorders, Deputy Human Resources
Minister Maznah Mazlan said Tuesday.

"They often carry heavy loads at work and there is a chance the effect on
the muscles and bones may be felt in five to 15 years," she said when closing a
seminar on Boosting Security Awareness at the Workplace, here.

Industrial and construction sector workers were exposed to chemicals and
dust due to poor air circulation and could suffer from cancer, skin diseases and
ailments related to internal organs and the respiratory tract, she said.

She said employers and employees must join forces to manage security and
health at the workplace.

Maznah said employers must provide safety equipment to the workers while the
workers were duty-bound to make use of the equipment at work.

She said a total 1,221 cases of illnesses which originated at the workplace
were reported last year as compared to 949 in 2009.
