M'SIAN PM NAJIB URGES THE PEOPLE TO FLY THE NATIONAL FLAG
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak Wednesday
called on all Malaysians to fly the "Jalur Gemilang", saying the four colours of
the national flag represented four principles which formed the very foundation
of the nation that can springboard it to greatness.
He said the first principle demanded of the people to uphold national unity
at all times; the second, to struggle and sacrifice in the national interest to
develop the country; the third, to maintain peace and harmony in their
endeavours; and the fourth, to utilise ingenuity and self-esteem as strengths to
achieve the national vision.
The prime minister spoke at the launch of the "Fly the Jalur Gemilang"
campaign at the KL Sentral station here. The four colours of the national flag
are blue, red, white and yellow.
Najib referred to the stripes on the national flag and likened them to the
transformation plan brought about by the government.
He urged the people regardless of race, status and religious belief to fly
the national flag, whether it is at home, at shops and business premises, at
offices, on their vehicles, or any other suitable place.
He said that by flying the national flag, they would be indirectly
indicating their understanding of the value of independence and loyalty to the
country and kindling their undeniable spirit of patriotism.
"Flying the Jalur Gemilang indicates that we are prepared to protect this
blessed land from anyone who harbours evil intentions against Malaysia," he
said.
Najib emphasised that though the country was about to celebrate its 54th
anniversary of independence, it did not mean that the nation was free from any
threat, saying that colonisation of the mind loomed as the latest menace.
"The past saw us struggle with the use of arms. Today, we are indebted to
those warriors who founded the nation, fighting with the use of weapons or the
quickness of mind and tongue until independence was achieved.
"The generation of the past has done a great deed. The generation of today
should carry on with the struggle. That's the best value and meaning
independence can have, when the people go all-out in their struggle to be more
successful," he said.
Najib said the launch of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign was unique
because he, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and several other Cabinet
ministers arrived at the KL Sentral station on board the ERL (Express Rail Link)
high-speed train from the Putrajaya Sentral station.
"At the Putrajaya administrative centre, the other Cabinet members and I
boarded the ERL train, a reflection of modern Malaysia, and cruised at 160km per
hour to the KL Sentral station, a symbol of the government and people of
Malaysia," he said.
Along the way, he said, he and the ministers were happy to see the national
flag flying atop buildings, on cars and along roads.
Najib said he was touched by the reception the people had accorded him and
the campaign, explaining that about 1,000 people had gathered at the Putrajaya
Sentral station and more than 5,000 people had thronged the KL Sentral station.
In his speech, he praised the presentation of patriotic songs by young
people, saying this would enable them to appreciate the meaning of independence.
Earlier, before boarding the ERL train at the Putrajaya Sentral station,
Najib signed a plaque commemorating the launch of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang
campaign in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2011, at the station.
Upon arrival at the KL Sentral station, he was greeted by cultural
performances by the various races and shouts of "1Malaysia" by several
participants of the National Service Training Programme.
At the launch, a video recording was played of chief ministers delivering
National Day speeches and calling on the people to appreciate the meaning of
independence and fly the national flag.
Najib, Muhyiddin and the other ministers affixed a Jalur Gemilang sticker on
the windscreen of 31 taxis and flagged off a four-wheel-drive National Day
convoy.
