MALAYSIA-VATICAN TIES TO PROMOTE BONDS OF MUTUAL FRIENDSHIP
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia decided to establish diplomatic relations with the Holy See, the episcopal jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Rome, in line with the desire to establish international relations between the two entities, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
It said in a statement that the relations would be at ambassadorial level on the part of Malaysia and at the level of Apostolic Nunciature on the part of the Holy See. An Apostolic Nunciature is a top-level diplomatic mission of the Holy See, equivalent to an embassy.
The relations would be based on the rules and regulations contained in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961, it added.
Malaysia and the Vatican agreed on July 18 to establish formal diplomatic relations to promote the bonds of mutual friendship and strengthen cooperation.
The announcement was made following an audience between Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Pope Benedict XVI at the papal summer residence in scenic Castel Gandolfo, outside Rome.
The establishment of the Malaysia-Vatican ties follows the footsteps of other Muslim-majority nations such as Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt and Libya as well as the Arab League and a majority of the members of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
