Iran regards Russia’s ‘step-by-step’ proposal as goodwill gesture: MP
TEHRAN, July 30 (MNA) -- Iran regards the Russian proposal for a “step-by-step” approach on Iran’s nuclear issue as a gesture of goodwill, senior MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi said in Tehran on Saturday.
On July 13, Russia made a proposal for a “step-by-step” approach, according to which Iran could address questions about its nuclear program and be rewarded with a gradual easing of sanctions.
Speaking to the Mehr News Agency, Boroujerdi said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s proposal is indicative of Moscow’s good intentions.
However, the Russians should take into consideration that the Islamic Republic of Iran has answered the International Atomic Energy Agency’s questions and have cleared up all ambiguities” regarding its nuclear activities, and the agency has confirmed that, Boroujerdi added.
“If answering questions and clearing up ambiguities is a precondition for easing of sanctions, thus according to what the agency has announced and what the Secretary General has stated, the sanctions must be eased,” said Boroujerdi, who is the chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
He added that Russia is somewhat interested in playing a role of a broker, but it should take the realities on the ground into account.
And the main truth is that Iran has cleared up all ambiguities in regard to its nuclear program, the senior lawmaker stated.
