GOVT NOT NODDING TO EMPLOYERS' DEMAND IN EXTENDING REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN WORKERS

KLUANG (Johor, Malaysia), July 31 (Bernama) -- Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein Sunday said that the government's decision to extend indefinitely the biometric registration of legal foreign workers did not mean that it was nodding to employers' demand.

Instead, he said the decision was made because the government wanted to see the best possible results from the implementation of the programme.

"It's not the duration that counts, it's the results. We are implementing the biometric registration programme because globalisation also brings about horrible threats like terrorism, trafficking of weapons and drugs.

"It's not like we are nodding to the demand (of employers). What matters to us is the results," he told reporters after presenting donation to mosques and suraus in Sembrong constituency here Sunday.

With the registration period extended indefinitely, Hishammuddin said employers should grab the opportunity to register their foreign workers soon as no excuse for not doing so would be accepted.

Hishammuddin said the implementation of the biometric registration would enable the government to overcome various problems including in preventing inflow of individuals linked to terrorist groups.

For an example, the minister said the government had also thwarted a recent attempt by an individual linked to a terrorist group to enter Malaysia using a fake passport.

The individual, known as Agus Salim from Indonesia, tried to enter Malaysia using a fake passport under the name of "Halim", he said.

Hishammuddin also said that Agus Salim, who is linked to the militant group, Jemaah Islamiyah, changed his identity and acquired the new passport after his application was endorsed by his village chief in Indonesia.
