No decision to downgrade ties with Britain: Iran
TEHRAN, Aug. 1 (MNA) -- Iran has not decided to reduce the level of diplomatic relations with Britain, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast has said.
Mehmanparast made the remarks in an interview with the Mehr News Agency.
Asked about the news reports saying that Britain has nominated an ambassador to Iran, Mehmanparast said, “As far as I am aware,” a new ambassador has been nominated, but the process is underway and takes times to complete.
He also said that Tehran has not yet nominated an ambassador to London.
Asked if this has anything to do with calls for a reduction in the level of ties with Britain, Mehmanparast said, “The British government’s policies on the Iranian nation have negatively affected (bilateral) relations to some extent.
“(However), we have not made a decision on reducing ties with Britain,” he said.
But Tehran has been in no rush to nominate an ambassador to London, he added.
A number of lawmakers, on a number of occasions, have urged the Foreign Ministry to reduce or even sever diplomatic relations with Britain due to its hostile attitude toward Iran and its interference in the country’s internal affairs.
On December 19, 2010, the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee voted to completely cut relations with London. The decision was then announced to the Majlis Presiding Board, but no final decision was reached.
