MPTC WORKING WITH UNDP TO CREATE NEW MODULE FOR FUTURE PEACEKEEPES
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Peacekeeping Training Centre (MPTC) has been working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to create a new module in training for future peacekeepers from Asia including Malaysia, and Africa.
Defence Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was to fulfil those requirements ranging from human rights, coordination between military and civilians, and addressing sexual violence and gender issues in their areas of responsibility.
"This project, named the UNDP-Mindef project on capacity-building support for Malaysia's role in multidimensional peacekeeping training, is realised through funding from the government of Japan.
"I hope the ambassador of Japan Shigeru Nakamura could convey my sincerest gratitude to the Japanese goverment for the US$1 million given to UNDP to make this project a reality," he said at the Defence Ministry's monthly assembly, here, Tuesday.
Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia's bilateral defence relations with Japan had been cordial although no formal ties were established, and he hoped the project would be a value added factor for the existing defence ties between the two countries.
"I hope that after the completion of the project, training and research will continue at MPTC for it to become a regional peacekeeping training centre of excellence," he said.
Meanwhile, Nakamura said Japan wanted to develop and strengthen the
coordination of peacekeeping operations involving Malaysia, Japan and UNDP from now on.
"At the same time, Japan is concentrating on the capacity-building
programme by sending experts here. We'd like to continue to do so with your support and to see closer relations between Japan and Malaysia in all areas," he said.
