PALEMBANG NOT READY, SO JAKARTA TO HANDLE FOOTBALL TOURNEY
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The SEA Games football tournament, which was scheduled to be held at Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang, will now be played at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
According to the Asean Football Federation (AFF) website, the Indonesian FA confirmed that the venue in Palembang would not be ready on time for the biennial event, thus forcing the organiser to move the football event to Jakarta.
"The stadium in Palembang will not be ready for the SEA Games, so the football tournament will now be held entirely in Jakarta," newly-elected Indonesian FA deputy president Farid Rahman told Bernama Tuesday.
As a result of the Jakabaring Stadium being ruled out, the AFF Under-23 Football Championship, which was to serve as a pre-SEA Games warm-up event, has been re-scheduled.
Originally slated for July 16-26, the AFF is now trying to identify suitable replacement dates.
Some dates have been proposed, either in late next month or mid-October.
However, there are issues with the availability of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium where the football competition will be held.
According to Farid, the stadium will undergo renovation work and would only be ready in late October. The football competition for the SEA Games is scheduled to start on Nov 7.
