Vic man on trial for murdering girlfriend

A man stabbed his girlfriend to death before burning her body in a house fire to hide his crime, a jury has heard.
Glen Mathew Weaven later confessed the killing to undercover police during secretly recorded conversations, prosecutor Mark Rochford SC told the Victorian Supreme Court jury.
Mother of three Mary Cook's charred body was found by firefighters called to her home in December, 2008.
An autopsy later found she died from a stab wound to the neck.
Weaven has pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Cook at her Narre Warren home.
Mr Rochford said Weaven argued with Ms Cook over a drug debt before using a steak knife from the kitchen drawer to stab her.
He later allegedly told others he "couldn't take it and he decided to finish her off", Mr Rochford said.
Weaven then stabbed Ms Cook twice in the stomach with a screwdriver, before igniting the mattress she was lying on to cover up his involvement.
Mr Rochford said the accused gave undercover operatives a number of versions of his involvement in the murder.
In one version, Weaven told an operative he arranged for a man to meet him at Ms Cook's home to supply cannabis.
Weaven said the man stabbed Ms Cook and Weaven panicked and "finished her off", believing his "fingerprints were everywhere".
Weaven allegedly said he then drove the man to a friend's house and the friend shot him dead, putting part of his body through a mincer before feeding it to some dogs.
Weaven later told the operative he had only given half the story and that things went wrong because Ms Cook had a large drug debt.
He felt "enough was enough" and stabbed her.
Weaven also took secret operatives to where he had disposed of the weapons, one of which was later recovered by police.
Defence barrister Gavan Meredith argued the confession on which the prosecution case relied was unreliable.
He suggested Weaven was skilfully manipulated by the operatives and his confession may have been false.
He told jurors they would have to be satisfied it was true and accurate.
The trial continues on Wednesday.
