MINISTER TO LEAD M'SIAN DELEGATION TO AEM MEETING IN INDONESIA

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - International Trade and Industry Minister, Mustapa Mohamed, will lead a delegation to the six-day Asean Economic Ministers (AEM) Meeting, beginning Aug 9, in Manado, Indonesia.

In a statement Thursday, the ministry said the 43rd AEM and AEM
consultations with economic ministers from China, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Russia and Deputy United States Trade Representative will be chaired by Minister of Trade Indonesia, Dr Mari Elka Pangestu.

The Asean ministers will also meet representatives of the Asean Business Advisory Council, East Asia Business Council and Asean-US Business Council, the ministry said.

The Asean Free Trade Area Council and Asean Investment Area Council meeting will also be held on the sidelines of the AEM.

According to the ministry, the annual meeting of Asean economic ministers would deliberate, among others, on the implementation progress of the Second Phase of the Asean Economic Community Scorecard measures (2010-2011); and the progress in implementation of the free trade agreements with dialogue partners, as well as, economic cooperation programmes.

The meeting would also deliberate on Asean Vision Beyond 2015; regional regulatory reform measures; impediments to expanding intra-Asean trade and investments; and initiatives aimed at narrowing development gap and promotion of small-and- medium enterprises in Asean, it said.

The ministry said the ministers would also review the current work of the on-going Asean 2030 study which was being undertaken by Asian Development Bank Institute.

Besides, the ministers would also look at areas of priority for Asean economic engagement beyond 2015, it added.

One initiative the ministers would discuss with dialogue partners, among others, will be to strengthen economic cooperation in the East Asian region, with the United States and the Russian Federation.
