PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDY ON HIGH-SPEED TRAIN TO BE COMPLETED BY AUG 19

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- A pre-feasibility study on the high-speed train connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is expected to be completed by August 19, said Director, Urban Public Transport NKRA, Ahmad Suhaili Idrus.

"It will be completed by Aug 19 and will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. We hope to start a detailed study this year when we obtain the approval," he said at the Government Transformation Programme NKRA update for January - June 2011 here Thursday.

He said the study would allow the government to decide on the corridors and stations to be located between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Ahmad Suhaili also said the load factor for KTM Komuter, which stood at 140 per cent today, was expected to be reduced to 125 per cent as targeted for 2011 with the delivery of new trains this year.

He said the first of the 38 sets of the six-car trains would be delivered in September while another four sets would arrive by year-end and the rest by June next year.

Ahmad Suhaili said rail ridership, which included RapidKL Kelana Jaya and Ampang line, Monorail, KTM Komuter and KLIA Transit, recorded an improvement of 15.7 per cent between January and May compared with the same period in 2010 which translated to an increase of 79,269 riders.

"This achievement is the result of the full operation of the 29 new four-car train sets for the Kelana Jaya LRT line," he added.

He said the Integrated Transport Terminal Bandar Tasik Selantan here which commenced operations in March has helped reduce 500 buses from the city centre.
