TOURISM MINISTRY CAN HELP PROMOTE LOCAL FURNITURE FAIR OVERSEAS
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Local furniture players have been invited
to work with the Tourism Ministry to promote the industry at the international
level.
Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen said the ministry could be of help through its
Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) which focuses on promoting
Malaysia as a destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and
exhibitions.
"We can help to promote if you provide us a year earlier the
exhibition itinerary so we can plan ahead," she said when opening the Malaysia
Furniture and Furnishings Fair 2011 (MF3) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre
here Thursday.
She said this was also in line with the ministry's efforts to boost business
tourism in the country which would be a more important segment in coming years.
Ng said the country's business tourism arrivals were targeted to grow
from five per cent (1.2 million) in 2009 to eight per cent (2.9 million) by
2020.
She said the government had recognised the vast potential of this segment
and had identified it as an entry point project under the Economic
Transformation Programme.
"Business tourism is important. Tourists under this segment come and stay
longer than normal tourists.
"They are estimated to spend at least three times more than an average
leisure visitor, at RM7,418 (US$2,472) compared to RM1,268 (US$634)," she said.
She said in 2010, expenditure from international business tourism was RM1.1
billion, with the economic impact value estimated at RM17.6 billion (US$5.86
billion).
"We aim to be in the top five of the International Congress and Convention
Association country rankings for Asia Pacific by year 2020," she added.
Malaysia currently ranks 28th globally from the 31st place in 2009.
The Malaysian furniture industry currently ranks ninth in the world, with
annual revenue of RM10 billion and is expected to rise to RM16 billion by 2020.
Earlier, MF3 Organising Chairman Edmond Chew said the four-day exhibition
was expected to attract 100,000 visitors with a turnover target of RM55 million.
Last year's exhibition attracted 70,000 visitors with a total turnover of
RM50 million, he added.
A total of 100 of furniture and furnishings companies showcase their
products at the exhibition this time.
