US RATIFIES THIRD PROTOCOL OF TAC

By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
JAKARTA (Bernama) - The United States' Ambassador to Asean David Lee Carden on Wednesday presented the Instrument of Acceptance to the Third Protocol of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), marking the US as the 11th High Contracting Party to ratify the protocol.

It was presented to the Deputy Secretary-General of Asean for Asean
Political-Security Community, Sayakane Sisouvong, the Asean Secretariat said in a statement here Thursday.

The statement said, during the brief presentation, Carden and Sayakane exchanged views on the successes of the recent 44th Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM), Post Ministerial Meeting (PMC) and the 18th Asean Regional Forum (ARF), held in Bali last month.

They also praised Indonesia as Chair of Asean for the success of the meetings.

The Third Protocol will permit regional organizations whose members are sovereign states to accede to the TAC, enabling the European Union (EU) to become a Contracting Party to the Treaty.

The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia is a peace treaty among Southeast Asian countries established by the founding members of the Asean in 1976. All Asean members have since become parties to the Treaty.

The treaty is aimed at promoting perpetual peace, everlasting amity and cooperation among the people of Southeast Asia which would contribute to their strength, solidarity, and closer relationship.

In 1987, Asean amended the Treaty to invite countries outside of Southeast Asia to accede to the Treaty in order to build confidence, promote peace and security, and facilitate economic cooperation in the region.
