KARATE SQUAD TO TRAIN IN JAPAN, EUROPE FOR SEA GAMES

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The 15-member national karate squad is to undergo intensive training in Japan, Switzerland and Turkey in preparation for the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia in November.

National coach P. Arivalagan said FRiday 10 of the athletes would be sent to Japan for a week in the third week of this month.

Upon their return, five of them would be substituted with the remaining five athletes for a week's stint in Switzerland in early September, he said, adding that these 10 athletes would also undergo training in Turkey in the middle of September.

Arivalagan told Bernama that five of the athletes bound for Europe were SEA Games gold medal prospects.

They were G.I. Yaamini (in the 61kg category), Jamalliah Jamaludin (68kg and above), Mohd Hatta Mahmud (84kg), Shahrudin Jamaludin (67kg) and L. Kunasilan(60kg), he said.

He said these athletes had won several international tournaments and had been consistent in their performance.
