UPDATE:SCOMI ENGINEERING BAGS MONORAIL PROJECT IN BRAZIL THROUGH CONSORTIUM


KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Scomi Engineering Bhd has been awarded the RM2.76 billion (US$916.051 million) Manaus Monorail project in Brazil, which it competed for through a consortium.

Of the RM2.76 billion, Scomi Engineering's share in the contract is
about RM646.38 million(US$214.644 million), the company said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia here Friday.

Other companies in the consortium are CR Almeida S/A Engenharia De Obras, Mendes Junior Trading E Engenharia S/A and Serveng-Civilsan S/A Empresas Associadas De Engenharia.

The contract is for design works, manufacture, supply and implementation of the monorail system for the 20-kilometre monorail line for the city of Manaus.

The project which is expected to be completed in 40 months, consists of nine stations from Largo da Matriz to Jorge Teixeira and involves the supply of 10 train sets consisting of six cars in each.

The company said the award does not have any impact on the share capital and/or shareholding structure of Scomi Engineering and or the financial results for the year ending Dec 31, 2011.

Meanwhile in a separate statement, Scomi Engineering said the Manaus Monorail project is the second, it had tender for and won in Brazil.

In June this year, Scomi announced that it had secured the RM2.6
billion Line 17 Sao Paolo Monorail project in Brazil together with its
consortium partners, Andrade Gutierrez SA, CR Almeida SA Engenharia de Obras and Montagens e Projetos Especiais SA.

Under the consortium for the Manaus Monorail, Scomi’s scope of works will involve the design and supply of rolling stock and depot equipment, design beam structure, supply maintenance vehicle, system integration and project management.

The project will provide efficient access to the airport,port, stadium, hotels, hospitals and other important locations, especially during the 2014 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Brazil.

Once completed, the monorail line will be able to carry about 35,000 passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) to meet the expected demand.

"This year, to date, has been a great one for Scomi as we reach yet another milestone with this second monorail project in Brazil.

"This award will further strengthen our position for the four upcoming tenders in the next 12 months in Brazil," said the group chief executive officer of Scomi Group, Shah Hakim Zain.

"Our partners in Brazil are the two largest infrastructure companies in South America and we intend to harness this alliance to further our market presence there," he said.

"Together with our consortium partners, CR Almeida, Mendes Junior and Serveng, we are confident in successfully delivering the Manaus Monorail project in time for the World Cup in Brazil," he added.
