Iranian doc on Sardasht chemical attack wins top prize at Italian festival

TEHRAN, Aug. 6 (MNA) -- The Iranian film “A Crime in Silence” was selected as the Best Short Film in the “Through the Land” section of the 16th Sole Luna Festival in Palermo, Italy.

Directed by Behruz Nuranipur, the documentary is a about the life of a family in Sardasht whose child suffers from the consequences of the chemical bombardment of the city.

The film was awarded “for the way in which the horrible effects of war are tackled, using the example of a family and the interesting metaphor of the destruction of a human face to express the concept of war” as the festival’s website announced.

Located in West Azerbaijan Province, Sardasht was struck by Iraqi chemical weapons on June 28, 1987, killing many civilians in the attack and injuring many more. It is estimated that over 1,000 were killed and over 8,000 were permanently disabled.

Although these people did not play a role in the war, their lives have been affected by it. The toys for their children are mines and guns, Nuranipur told the Persian service of ISNA.

Sole Luna Festival represents an instrument of communication that finds strength in innovative events and initiatives that are able to promote open dialogue and non-prejudicial confrontation between cultures.
