FOREIGN MAID BIOMETRIC REGISTRATION TO BE DONE WHEN EMPLOYERS RENEW THEIR WORK PERMIT - MINISTER

BUTTERWORTH (Malaysia), Aug 6 (Bernama) -- About 250,000 foreign maids
working in the country will be registered under the biometric system when their
employers renew their work permits.

Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam said foreign maids do not
come under the registration of illegal immigrants biometric registration
programme (Program 6P) for industry workers.

"There are 1.9 million legal foreign workers in the country and that
included 250,000 foreign maids. This means

"This means 1.65 million foreign workers in various sectors need to register
themselves under the current biometric system," he told reporters after opening
the Penang level 2011 Myskills programme here Saturday.

The National Foreigners Enforcement and Registration System (NERS) will be
linked to the police’s existing Biometric Fingerprint Identification System
(BIOFIS) to grant law enforcers access to the movements of foreigners with
criminal records.
