Iran overcomes Japan in Jones Cup
TEHRAN, Aug. 8 (MNA) – Iran defeated Japan in the 2011 William Jones Cup on Sunday.
The titleholder, who was beaten by the Philippines in its opening match, overcame Japan 77-58 in New Taipei City.
In other action, South Korea crushed the UAE 102-54 and Jordan defeated Malaysia 93-63.
Two-time champion Iran will play South Korea on Monday at the Sinjhuang Stadium.
Under the new format, all teams will play a single round elimination, with the top four teams advancing to the crossover semifinals. The two best teams to emerge from the semis will then dispute the title.
Iran participate in the tournament with its key players such as Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami.
The Asian powerhouse is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Championship scheduled to be held in Wuhan, China from September 15 to 25 where the winning finalist goes to the Olympics next year.
