Iran to grant $25 million aid to famine-stricken Somalis

TEHRAN, Aug. 9 (MNA) –Foreign Minister Ali Akbar announced on Sunday that Iran plans to donate $25 million humanitarian aid to the people affected by famine in Somalia.

Now millions of people in Somalia are living in deplorable conditions, and the Iranian government plans to assist the famine-hit people, Salehi told reporters on the sidelines of the cabinet meeting in Tehran on Sunday.

On July 20, the United Nations declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia owing to the worst drought in decades, and appealed for urgent resources to assist millions of people in desperate need of help.

In reply to a question about appointment of new ambassador to Tehran by Britain, Salehi said, “It is natural because we do still have diplomatic relations with the country.”

“It seems that Britain plans to send an ambassador to Iran,” he added.

Asked about the launch of the Bushehr power plant, he said the process is well under way, and the plant will be connected to the national grid late in August.

He also said, “Mr. Abbasi (director of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran) intends to hold a brief ceremony for inauguration of the power plant in the near future, however, we are planning to hold a bigger ceremony after making sure that the plant has been launched (efficiently).”
