ASYRAF, THE VICTIM OF LONDON RIOTS, A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR YOUTHS
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) – Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu, who had visited Asyraf Haziq Rosli, 20, the victim of muggers during the recent London riots, has decribed the latter as a good role model for the youths.
He said Asyraf was very brave in the face of danger and despite the ordeal that he went through, he bore no grudge or misgiving against his attackers and the looters who took his belongings.
"He is in good spirit after the operation and displays his strength and positive attitude towards what has befallen him. That is something exemplary and what we should all be proud of.
"Asyraf is determined to carry on with his studies and sets himself a good role model for the youth,” Gan said in a statement issued here Friday.
Gan, who is currently on an official trip to United Kingdom, has spent some
30 minutes with Asyraf at the Malaysian High Commision in Belgrave Square
Friday.
Gan was informed of Asyraf's misfortune upon his arrival in London on
Wednesday and had gone to the Royal London Hospital, where Asyraf was warded
following the attacks but did not manage to meet the accounting student, who was
undergoing surgery at that time.
"I thought I should meet Asyraf and see if I could extend any help,” he
said.
Gan also praised the Malaysian High Commission in London for taking swift
actions and doing whatever necessary to help Asyraf, including liaising with the
police, arranging food and accommodation for him during this trying time.
The Deputy Minister is on a five-day visit to the United Kingdom which among
others included lending support to the Malaysian team at the World Badminton
Championships in London, discussing youth development programmes with the
Commonwealth Secretariat and having dialogues with student leaders.
