SINGAPOREAN FINED MORE THAN US$33,000 FOR SMUGGLING IN WILDLIFE
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - A Singaporean was fined RM100,000
(US$33,344) by the Sessions Court here Thursday for smuggling in wildlife without a licence.
According to a statement from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks the man was found guilty on five counts of cruelty to wildlife under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and International Trade In Endangered Species Act 2008.
The accused was arrested on July 24 for smuggling 34 birds of various species like White Tailed Robin, Blue Throated Flycatcher, European Starling and Hwamei in PVC pipes and wooden boxes placed in a bag.
The statement also said four of the bird species were in the endangered species list.
The accused entered Malaysia via a flight from China to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), it said.
