Iranian MP says injustice is root cause of unrest in Britain

TEHRAN, Aug. 14 (MNA) - Iranian MP Zohreh Elahian says that the “chronic injustice” prevailing in the United Kingdom underlies the unrest sweeping the country.

Elahian, chairperson of the Majlis Human Rights Committee, made the remarks in an interview with the Fars News Agency published on Saturday.

During the interview, Elahian commented on British Charge d’Affaires Jane Marriott’s letter to the Iranian Foreign Ministry dated August 11, in which she said Britain was happy to discuss its handling of street unrest after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the UK to curb its “savage” treatment of protesters.

The Iranian MP said, “It is self-evident that the realities on the ground in the British society cannot be changed through human rights dialogue.”

Discrimination, low standard of living, and injustice lie at the root of the tumult gripping Britain, she added.

The situation unfolding in Britain raises serious concerns about human rights situation in the country, she said, adding, “We have always welcomed human rights dialogues but not with the countries that are seeking to use the issue of human rights as a tool” to accomplish their political purposes.

However, if the British charge d’affaires is insistent on holding talks with Iranian officials on the situation playing out in the UK, Tehran will review her proposal, Elahian stated.

She also predicted that the protests will continue in the northwestern European country.

Students to hold demo over crackdowns in UK

Elahian also announced that a number of university students will hold a demonstration outside the British Embassy in Tehran at 5.30 p.m. local time on Sunday to denounce the police crackdown of protesters in Britain.

She also announced that a number of lawmakers are scheduled to attend the demonstration.
