Iran confirms arrest of PKK’s number two

TEHRAN, Aug. 15 (MNA) – Top Iranian legislator Alaeddin Boroujerdi has confirmed Turkish media reports that Iranian security forces have captured the second top member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Murat Karayilan.

“The news is true. Iranian intelligence forces have arrested the terrorist group’s number two,” Boroujerdi, chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told the Fars News Agency on Sunday when asked about the veracity of the news.

“Our intelligence forces have carried out a great work,” he said.

He added that he believes the recent terrorist actions carried out by the counter-revolutionary group PJAK (the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan) in northwestern Iran have been a reaction to Iran’s great move.

Murat Karayilan has been PKK’s acting leader ever since its original founder and leader Abdullah Ocalan was captured in 1999.

PKK is a separatist organization which has since 1984 been fighting an armed struggle against the Turkish government for an autonomous Kurdistan.

PJAK is an offshoot of PKK which regularly engages in armed clashes with Iranian security forces along the country’s northwestern borders with Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
