Iran secures William Jones Cup final berth

Iran routed the Philippines to secure a place in final of the 2011 William Jones Cup invitational tournament in Taipei on Saturday.

The title-holder Iran beat the Philippines 78-59 and advanced to the final. Iran had already lost to the team 73-59 in the first round.

South Korea also defeated Taiwan 90-85 and advanced to final.

Iran is scheduled to face the Korean team on Sunday. The Persians have participated in the tournament four times, in which have won twice.

The Iranian team is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Championship scheduled to be held in Wuhan, China from September 15 to 25 where the winning finalist goes to the Olympics next year, said the report.

The William Jones Cup is an international basketball tournament held annually in China's Taiwan. It was named after Renato William Jones, a basketball promoter and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
