PM: FELDA A SWEET SUCCESS STORY IN NATION'S HISTORY
KOTA TINGGI (Bernama) -- The Federal Land
Development Authority (Felda) is a sweet success story in the nation's history, said Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Felda was transforming people's lives at a time when the word
'transformation' had not been popularised yet, he said.
He described Felda's success as unique and special during his visit to Felda Tunggal here today and said, "114,000 families have benefitted from the scheme and we will make it an even stronger institution."
According to Najib, Felda settlers' average income of RM4,000 (US$1,340) per month was equivalent to a city dweller's RM8,000 (us$2,680)per month.
He said Felda's success which proved to be a pillar of strength for the government did not go down well with certain parties, who had spread lies that Felda was bankrupt.
"How can a bankrupt institution afford to pay tithes. Felda Johor alone paid RM3 million (US$1,004)," he said.
Commenting on the development in Felda Tunggal, Najib said he was impressed with the settlers' one and two-storey concrete bungalows.
The Prime Minister also made a 20-minute visit to Mohd Taha Halil's home, a settler in his 70s.
Mohd Talha said he was deeply touched to have the prime minister himself visiting him.
"I never expected my house to be chosen for Najib's visit. Thank God," he told reporters.
Najib was welcomed by more than 3,000 people and later joined them for prayers and lent a helping hand to prepare the 'bubur lambuk' (porridge) for the breaking of fast at the Al-Ikhwan mosque.
