Member of Libya’s Interim National Transitional Council in Tehran

TEHRAN, Aug. 15 (MNA) - A member of Libya’s Interim National Transitional Council, Abdul Monem al-Houni, arrived in Tehran on Sunday to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials.

His visit marks the first time a Libyan opposition member has visited Iran since the pro-democracy uprising broke out in Libya on February 15, 2011.

The Interim National Transitional Council is a political body formed to represent Libya by anti-Gaddafi forces during the 2011 Libyan civil war against the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Its formation was announced in the city of Benghazi on February 27, 2011 and its intended purpose is to act as the “political face of the revolution”. On March 5, 2011, the council issued a statement in which it declared itself to be the “only legitimate body representing the people of Libya and the Libyan state”.
