SURPRISE CHECK REVEALS BALD TYRES STILL BEING USED BY AIRCRAFT
Ahmad Fuad Yahya
JAKARTA, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Surprise checks by personnel from the Air Communications Directorate-General of the Indonesian Ministry of Communications at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tengerang on Sunday revealed that there are aircraft still using tyres categorised as 'bald' or worn out, a news daily reported on Monday.
Checks on 17 aircraft belonging to three local airlines found that generally the aircraft were in good condition, except that there were aeroplanes using bald tyres.
Following the discovery, the airlines concerned had been asked to replace the tyres of the affected aircraft immediately in line with the safety standards specified, the Director-General of Air Communications, Herry Bakti, was quoted as saying at Terminal Two of the airport by the Media Indonesia daily.
The Director of Air Worthiness and Aircraft Operations Division, Yulis Hasibuan, speaking at the same place, said aircraft tyres were usually categorised as bald after the tyres had been used for take-offs and landings more than 250 times or the thread had become very thin.
The surprise checks were carried out to assess the preparations at the air terminal to handle the unusually large number of passengers who would be returning to their villages, or better known in Indonesia as 'arus mudik', for the Aidilfitri celebration at the end of the month.
Herry said 14 other airports in Indonesia would be checked continuously in the near future.
