INDONESIA HOPES MAID EXPORT WILL CEASE IN 15 YEARS

JAKARTA, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Indonesia hopes it will not need to continue exporting maids in 15 years when plentiful job opportunities are created in the country.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in expressing the hope, said this would bring to an end various problems faced by Indonesians working in the informal sector (domestic help) abroad.

"This year there were a number of cases that drew wide attention from Indonesians, among them the death sentence enforced on an Indonesian in Saudi Arabia. The death sentence hurt our feelings," he said when making the presidential address in Indonesia's Parliament here on Tuesday.

The address, an annual affair, is in conjunction with Indonesia's 66th Independence anniversary on Wednesday.

He said because Indonesia exported a huge workforce, the number of its nationals facing problems with the law in their host countries was also accordingly high.

Some were involved in serious crimes like murder and drug trafficking which in some countries carried the death sentence and a number of Indonesians found guilty of such offences had been executed, he said.

He said the Indonesian government had in place a special task force to appeal for clemency or lightening of punishment and that it was showing results.

He added that diplomatic efforts were also being pursued with importing countries to ensure the welfare of Indonesian workers abroad was looked after.
