SOMALIA HUNGER CRISIS FUND IN NEED OF US$1 MIL
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The Somalia Hunger Crisis Fund, launched by the Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) on Tuesday, needs a total of US$1 million to help the people of Somalia whose country is facing a worsening drought situation.
IRM National Director Zairulshahfuddin Zainal Abidin said about 10 million Somalians were affected by the continuous drought which has destroyed crops and cattle.
He said the aid being channeled to help these victims included clean water, food and medical assistance, as well as other social development projects such as those pertaining to education and the family.
"For US$750 we can treat malnourished children and US$4,500 can provide a month's supply of clean water for 200 families. With US$50,000 we can provide services from a mobile clinic for a week," he said at a news conference here on Tuesday.
He added that a programme to help the people of Somalia had already been carried out since February, with about 50,000 people already enjoying aid and treatment by IRM volunteers who were still in the country.
Besides that, the IRM has also distributed about 6,000 food boxes containing eight basic food items to the poor in Malaysia in conjunction with the coming festivities.
Each family received a food box filled with rice, sugar, flour, salt, cooking oil, rice noodles, sardines and tea.
