M'SIAN ENVOY URGES OVERSEAS MALAYS TO BE UNITED
MELBOURNE, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's consul-general here, Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya, said it is important for Malays living overseas to be united and work together for the benefit of the community.
Addressing about 150 people at the inaugural iftar (breaking of fast) at the Broadmeadow Youth Centre here, he said events such as the iftar was a good opportunity for Muslims to exchange ideas and discuss issues that would enhance their well-being.
The envoy praised and thanked the Malay Education and Culture Centre of Australia (MECCA) for organising the event and hoped it would be an annual affair.
MECCA co-founder, Dr Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani, an honorary academic at
Melbourne-based Monash University, said he was keen to encourage Malay
Australians to interact with other communities in the country.
Islamic Council of Victoria president, Hyder Ghulam, a delegation from the Turkish community and other Muslim bodies were present at the iftar where they enjoyed food prepared by 15 Malay social and charitable groups.
Malays in the State of Victoria, who number about 5,000 according to Dr Ahmad Zaharuddin's research, are planning to have their own mosque.
Mosque planners want to raise A$20,000 by the end of this month for
preliminary work.
