CHINA TO HOST 2012 THOMAS, UBER CUP
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) – The 2012 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, the world men's and women's badminton team championships respectively, will be held in central China's Wuhan city on May 20-27 next year, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Friday.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) honorary secretary Ng Chin Chai told Bernama on Wednesday that Malaysia will play in the Asia qualifying competition in Macau on Feb 14-19.
"Jakarta, Indonesia and Wuhan had bid for the host job and BWF chose Wuhan in considering its excellent preparations and the desire of promoting badminton in the city and China," said BWF vice president Paisan Rangsikitpho after the announcement was made.
Zhang Jin, deputy director of the Sports Administration of Hubei Province, whose capital is Wuhan, said it is a great honour for Wuhan and Hubei Province to host the 2012 Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments.
The Thomas and Uber Cup competitions are two of BWF's top three team events and are held every two years.
China has won the Thomas Cup eight times and the Uber Cup six times in a row.
Last year, Malaysia, despite playing at home, lost 0-3 to China in the semifinals.
The last time Malaysia won the Thomas Cup was in 1992 after beating
Indonesia 3-2 at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.
