Senator Coonan tipped to retire
SYDNEY (AAP) - Aug. 17 - Former prime minister John Howard says Liberal senator Helen Coonan's retirement will be a loss to the parliament.
Senator Coonan will make a statement to the Senate at 5pm (AEST) on Thursday and it is expected she will announce her retirement.
She has represented NSW in the senate since 1996 and served as assistant treasurer then communication minister in the Howard government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday night, Mr Howard said Senator Coonan had handled the latter portfolio with flair and had been a strong contributor to general cabinet discussions.
"I valued Helen Coonan greatly as a loyal member of the Liberal team and over time as a senior colleague in government," he said.
"She was an energetic senator, a diligent minister and a well-liked deputy leader of the government in the Senate."
He wished her good health and good fortune for the future.
If Senator Coonan does retire, her seat in the Senate will go to a candidate selected by the NSW Liberal Party.
