SOUTH CHINA SEA DISPUTE HAS NO IMPACT ON PBGEC
NANNING (Guangxi, China) Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The South China Sea dispute between China and Asean countries has no impact on the bilateral trade and economic cooperation in the Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation (PBGEC).
Deputy Director-General of the Planning, Construction and Administration Commission of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, Chen Ruixian, said there were continuous discussions and negotiations between the countries to resolve the issues.
"The South China Sea dispute will not affect the cooperation between Asean and PBG countries.
"From the participation and representation of high-level officers in the 6th PBGEC Forum, it shows that the PBG countries aim to enhance cooperation for bilateral relations, expand cooperation for mutual trust with the principle of safeguarding common interests of all parties and materialise win-win development.
"We strongly believe that the concerted efforts from the Chinese government, Asean members and PBG countries, the PBGEC Forum will be fruitful and more successful," he said in a media conference here on Wednesday.
The annual PBGEC Forum kicked off here on Thursday.
About 200 participants including officials, experts, scholars from research institutions and representatives from financial institutions and international organisations from China and Asean have gathered for the two-day forum in the capital city of China's Southwest Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region.
Chen said the annual PBGEC Forum was gaining strong momentum since it was first held here in 2006.
Last year, he said, China's total trade with other PBG nations reached US$285.835 billion and of that, 97.63 percent was between China and Asean countries.
"As the forefront for Asean-China cooperation, Guangxi's trade with other PBG countries took up 99.51 percent of Guangxi's total trade with Asean countries last year," he said.
Therefore, Chen, who is also Deputy Secretary-General of the Organising Committee of the 6th PBGEC Forum, said the forum would serve as a platform to accomplish tasks to institutionalise and advance the PBG cooperation by conducting new projects in specific areas.
"The forum will further expand the Asean-China cooperation and trade, especially in the China-Asean Free Trade Area (CAFTA)," he said adding that the 6th PBGEC Forum would be more pragmatic and an in-depth discussion would be held on leading sectors and projects.
This year marks the second anniversary of CAFTA. Since the implementation of CAFTA, there has been rapid bilateral trade growth between Asean and China.
"Statistics show that in 1991, bilateral trade between Asean and China was only US$7.96 billion however it jumped to US$292.78 billion last year.
"For the first half of this year, bilateral trade increased by 25 percent, reaching US$171.12 billion. By end of June this year, two-way investment amounted to nearly US$80 billion," he said.
Chen said China was Asean's largest trading partner and Asean became China's third largest trading partner, overtaking Japan.
"This shows a good beginning of CAFTA. Asean-China economic cooperation and trade has achieved new heights and it will have a broader prospect," he said.
