SALE OF COSMETIC PRODUCT WITH SCHEDULED POISONS HALTED

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Consumers have been cautioned against using a cosmetic product believed to contain scheduled poisons, namely tretinoin and hydroquinone.

DRx Aesthetics Sdn Bhd, the local company responsible for placing the product, Derma-Rx Arbutin-R Cream, has been instructed to immediately halt the sale and supply of the item from the market within 72 hours.

"The use of tretinoin and hydroquinone in cosmetic products are prohibited," Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Services senior director, Eisah A. Rahman said in a statement on Friday.

Tretinoin may cause redness to the skin, peeling, discomfort and skin becoming sensitive to sunlight, while hydroquinone may similarly cause redness to the skin, skin discoloration, hypersensitivity and gradual blue-black darkening of the skin.

"Hydroquinone inhibits the pigmentation process. This process attenuates the ability of the skin to protect our body from harmful UV rays and excessive sunlight which can bring a risk of skin cancer," Eisah said of the product manufactured by Spain's Laboratory Sinnoqa S.L.
