Iran has a positive view on Russia’s ‘step-by-step’ plan: Salehi
TEHRAN, Aug. 18 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has said that Iran has a positive view on Russia’s proposal for a “step-by-step” plan toward Iran’s nuclear program.
Salehi made the remarks in an interview with the Fars News Agency after a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.
On July 13, Russia made a proposal for a step-by-step approach, according to which Iran could address questions about its nuclear program and be rewarded with a gradual easing of sanctions.
According to Irannuc.ir, Salehi officially received the complete plan during a meeting with Lavrov, which was held before the press conference.
During the interview, Salehi said, “We agreed with the spirit of the proposal,” adding, “It should be the case that if one side takes a step, the other side takes a corresponding step.”
He also said, “The details of the initiative need to be discussed, and it was agreed that the Russians would submit the written plan to us.”
“It was also agreed that our experts would work on the initiative,” he stated, adding, “We have never had a negative attitude toward cooperation.”
Asked if the proposal will serve Iran’s interests, Salehi said, “The plan is well-intentioned, and in our view, our nuclear issue should be resolved, and it is the Westerners who have some questions and have created some stumbling blocks… However, the Russians took the trouble and introduced an initiative to create an understanding between both sides, and we welcome that.”
During the press conference, Salehi said, “We plan to study the details of the initiative” and complete it in cooperation with Russian experts.
“We have a positive view on the plan and welcome any effort or proposal meant to start constructive negotiations for cooperation,” he added.
Lavrov, according to a translation of his remarks, said that the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program should be resolved through diplomatic channels.
He also expressed hope that the negotiations between Moscow and Tehran would continue.
In addition, during his meeting with Lavrov, Salehi described the plan as a “step forward” and a “gesture of goodwill”.
Iran welcomes Russian initiative
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Tehran on Wednesday, in which he said Iran welcomes the step-by-step plan.
He also called for the expansion of ties between Iran and Russia.
Patrushev said that Moscow is ready to increase cooperation with the Islamic Republic in various spheres.
