TWO DRUG SEIZURES BY KLIA CUSTOMS FRIDAY
SEPANG (Selanggor, Malaysia), Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Customs officers at the KL
International Airportthwarted attempts to smuggle in drugs, worth RM295,000
(US$98,000), in two cases Friday.
KLIA Customs director M. Govinden said the first seizure was made at
about midnight involving a 33-year-old African man who arrived on Qatar
Airways from Doha.
A scan on a bag he was carrying produced a suspicious image and following
inspection, a packet containing powder, believed to be drug, was found in it, he
said.
He said tests were conducted on the powder and it was found to be
methamphetamine positive.
"The drug weighs 1.9kg and the estimated value is RM475,000 (US$158,000),"
he told reporters here Saturday.
Govinden said the second case involved a male Malaysian citizen, aged 42,
who arrived at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) on an Air Asia flight from
Shenzhen, China.
He said a thorough inspection was made on a bag the man was carrying after
the scan produced a suspicious image.
"Four silver coloured plastic packets which contained crystal powder, which
tested ketamine positive, were found in the bag.
"The drug, weighing 6.64kg is valued at RM120,000 (US$40,000)," he added.
He said the two suspects were in remand for a week for investigation under
Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the mandatory death
sentence upon conviction.
