Aussie wins bronze in Canoe World Champs

Sydney paddler Naomi Flood grabbed a bronze medal in the final of the Women's K1 1000m at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Hungary on Friday.
Flood, who paddles for the Manly Warringah club but lives on the Gold Coast, qualified a position at the Olympic Games with her medal, trailing home local girl Tamara Csipes in front of the Szeged crowd in southern Hungary.
Csipes won in 4min 11.38sec ahead of the USA's Krisztina Zur (4:13.47) with Flood in 4:14.12.
"Going into that I was just trying to get top six," Flood said after the race.
"I could see the other girls on the left, and they were going for it and I decided to hang in there. It was pretty close in the end.
"I had to go out hard and then settle so I had something left.
"The headwind is pretty tough out there. Going into the last 500 you get closer to the crowd, and the crowd is going berserk and it kind of spurs you on."
Australia's plans for the London Olympic Games received a boost with results from the World Championships, when Western Australia's Alana Nicholls qualified for her final on Saturday, finishing second in her semi-final.
Other finalists on Saturday will be Gold Coast's Matt Urquhart in the Men's K1 500m and the Men's K4 1000m crew of Tate Smith, Jacob Clear (both Gold Coast), David Smith (Illawarra) and Murray Stewart (Manly).
