SINGAPORE'S SMRT TO SET UP COMMITTEE TO REVIEW SECURITY MEASURES
By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah
SINGAPORE, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Singapore's public transport operator SMRT
Corp Ltd said it was taking full responsibility for the security breach at its
Bishan depot, which resulted in a train carriage sprayed with graffiti.
An independent committee will also be set up to conduct a comprehensive
review of security measures and management of the company.
Chief executive officer Saw Phaik Hwa said she would personally chair the
committee which would comprise independent security experts.
"The management of the current security (measures) will not be involved in
this review, so that it is truly independent.
"There is no cover-up, there's no cutting of corners or anything like that.
We want to have a system that's truly comprehensive and will hold up to test.
"And as a company, SMRT has to be ultimately responsible for what has
happened...so, there should not be finger-pointing, because it is our commitment
to ensure the safety of our trains," she was quoted as saying by local
television, Channel NewsAsia.
The breach at Bishan Depot was discovered last Wednesday morning.
