Iran, Turkey obligated to help regional nations achieve freedom: Ahmadinejad

TEHRAN, Aug. 23 (MNA)-- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, during a telephone conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, said Iran and Turkey have a “historic duty” to help regional nations move in the path to freedom and justice.

“The two countries should have close cooperation with each other to help regional nations achieve freedom, democracy, and justice,” Ahmadinejad noted.

He also thanked the Turkish prime minister for opposing the intervention of NATO and major powers in regional countries’ affairs and said the Westerners’ interference will further complicate the situation in the region.

“The interference of the United States and European countries in the region is unacceptable because regional issues have no Western solutions,” he said, adding, “All regional issues could be resolved through adopting Islamic approaches in a way that people gain their rights without suffering damage.”

Ahmadinejad cited the case of Libya as an example that proves the failure of bullying powers’ interventionist policies on the region.

“Undoubtedly the situation in this country would have been much better, if a group of mediators, trusted by both the government and protesters, had been sent to the country instead of dispatching military forces,” Ahmadinejad said in an indirect reference to NATO military intervention in Libya.

Without mentioning Syria by name, he continued, “Iran and Turkey in cooperation with other nations can implement this initiative (sending mediators) in other regional countries, which have been experiencing popular movements, to promptly and justly settle the issues.”

He went on to say that the Westerners’ past record is full of crimes against humanity, adding experience shows that they have no intention of resolving the issues facing Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Libya, but are only seeking to gain the upper hand in the region and save the Zionist regime.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president praised Turkey’s efforts to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Somalia, saying that the Islamic Republic will support every effort meant to help Somalis, who have been badly affected by a devastating famine.

Erdogan also informed Ahmadinejad about the latest situation of the famine-stricken country and measures taken by the Turkish government to help ease the crisis.

He added that Somalis are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

On the relationship between Tehran and Ankara, he said that Iran and Turkey are able to take effective steps to help resolve regional issues through increasing their cooperation, emphasizing that Turkey attaches high importance to Iran’s stance on regional developments.
