' Iran`s Judiciary independently handled two U.S. citizens’ case'
TEHRAN, Aug.23 (MNA)-- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said on Sunday that the trial process of the two U.S. citizens, who were arrested in Iran in 2009, was carried out based on correct legal proceedings and the independent mandate of the Judiciary.
However, they (the two U.S. citizens) have the right to appeal, he added.
Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer, and Joshua Fattal were arrested by border guards on July 31, 2009 after illegally entering Iran’s territory from Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The three were charged with illegal entry and espionage.
Shourd was released from prison on bail of $500,000 on September 14, 2010.
On August 20, Bauer and Fattal were sentenced to three years for illegally entering Iran and five years for spying.
They have 20 days to appeal against the verdict.
Shourd’s case is still open.
