CALIFORNIA-BASED SOLEXEL TO INVEST US$943.14 MILLION IN CRYSTALLINE SOLAR CELL PRODUCTION
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Solexel (M) Sdn Bhd (Solexel), an innovative
solar PV module manufacturer, based in Milpatas, California, plans to produce
crystalline solar cell and modules with an aggregate investment of RM2.8 billion
(US$943.14 million) in the next five years.
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said this significant investment
would provide 2,300 jobs for the people and generate significant economic
activities in the region.
Solexel's solar cell project was one of the technology sectors that the
government was highly promoting currently to encourage green and renewable
energy industry in the country that would form the foundation for future green
energy policy for the nation, he said.
The project would also bolster the nation's economy, said Najib, who is also
Finance Minister, who witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) between Solexel and Senai Hi-Tech Park Sdn Bhd.
The MoU is to set up a manufacturing facility for the production of
crystalline silicon solar cell on a 100-acre site in collaboration with the
Senai Hi-Tech Park at the Iskandar Industrial Zone Phase 1.
The MoU was signed by Senai Hi-Tech Park chief executive officer Ahmad
Shukri Tajuddin and Solexel president and ceo Michael Wingert.
Present were Johor Chief Minister Abdul Ghani Othman and International
Trade and Industry deputy minister Mukhriz Mahathir.
