MINISTER TO HELP CHECK WOMEN BECOMING DRUG MULES
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- Women, Family and Community Development
Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is to meet three other cabinet
ministers to resolve the issue of Malaysians being used as drug mules.
They are Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Foreign Minister
Anifah Aman and Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled
Nordin, she said.
"We will discuss with Hishammuddin on how to help the (existing)
victims, with Anifah on how to bring them back and with
Khaled and Malaysian envoys on issuing reminders to our students," she told
reporters at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Earlier, Shahrizat had a meeting with Rosna Shariff, 43, a Malaysian who was
brought back from Peru where she had been imprisoned after being caught as a
drug mule.
Rosna was caught for carrying cocaine four years ago and had served a prison
term of two years and eight months.
Shahrizat said the ministry had a representative on the committee to rescue
drug mules set up by the Putra 1Malaysia Club and the Berita Harian newspaper (a
local Malay daily). The committee had helped to bring back Rosna.
The committee would bring back 11 other women who had been caught in Peru,
after Aidilfitri, she added.
Shahrizat said the ministry would cooperate with the Putra 1Malaysia Club to
hold intervention programmes as many Malaysian women had become easy prey for
foreigners tricking them into becoming drug mules.
