SAFETY WILL BE MAJOR CHALLENGE FACED BY AID MISSION TO SOMALIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- Safety in conflict rife Somalia will be
among the major challenges to Putera 1Malaysia when carrying out its
humanity aid mission from Aug 28 to Sept 8.

Putera 1Malaysia Club is a new and exciting non-governmental organisation
(NGO) that aims to unite the youth of our country.

Its chairman, Abdul Azeez Rahim said the matter had been studied
carefully in terms of risk when crossing the country to reach the temporary
camp.

"The challenge is in the crisis hit environment but we are optimistic that
with the support from officers of the Malaysian Security Forces, we can manage.

"We have informed Prime Minister Datuk Ser i Najib Tun Razak and his wife
Rosmah Mansor of all the safety measures taken and the presence of
Malaysia is very much welcomed.

"The Somalians prefer the mission from Malaysia," he told reporters after a
meeting former drug mule, Rosna Shariff with Women, Family and Community
Development Minister  Shahrizat Abdul Jalil here Wednesday.

Azeez said besides safety, other challenges included distributing food aid
as each camp was about 200km apart and the country was now facing a major
drought.

About 200 tonnes of food supplies and one tonne of medicine will be
transported to Somalia.

According to the United Nations, more than 300,000 children in the Horn of
Africa are malnourished due to the deadly drought and famine.
