IIUM MAINTAINS TIGHT CONTROL ON FOREIGN STUDENT INTAKE
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University
Malaysia (IIUM) maintains a tight control on foreign student intake to prevent
abuse of student visas, said its rector, Dr Zaleha Kamruddin.
She said the university's foreign student intake policy concentrated on
quality, not quantity of students.
"Even though we set a target of 30 per cent international students for
postgraduate and undergraduate programmes, students go through a detailed
selection process as we do not want students enrolled to be involved in
undesirable activities.
"Hence, deans of the university will have to make a thorough selection based
on specified criteria," she told reporters after the breaking of fast and
handing over of RM200 cash aid to 15 disabled IIUM employees by IIUM president
Sidek Hassan here Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, IIUM Dean of Admissions and Records Division Assistant Prof Dr.
Shamsul Jamili said 250 foreign students were expected to enrol for first degree
courses at the university in September.
"The number is 20 per cent less than last year's intake due to competition
from other universities since the academic year had been changed to September,"
he said.
