BAN ON IMPORT OF MILK, MILK PRODUCTS FROM CHINA AS PRECAUTION

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- As a precautionary measure against
melamine poisoning in milk products, the Health Ministry has imposed an import ban on all infant formulas, milk and milk products from China.

A statement from the ministry said inspection at Level 6 (Auto Rejection)
through the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia - FoSIM) had also been
enforced to detect milk and milk products from China.

The statement referred to the case of three babies in China which died
and
6,000 more falling sick after drinking milk contaminated with melamine, which is
an industrial chemical used for making plastic cups and plates.

Foreign news reports Friday said that 10 per cent of samples taken from a
major milk producer in China showed that they were contaminated with
melamine.

In a separate statement today, Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said
parents should not be unduly worried as Malaysia did not import dairy products
from China.
