40 YEARS ON, KONTENA NASION AIMS TO BECOME GLOBAL PLAYER
40 YEARS ON, KONTENA NASION AIMS TO BECOME GLOBAL PLAYER
By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah
SINGAPORE, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Premier logistics company, Kontena Nasional
Bhd, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary Friday, aspires to grow in all
its key business segments to become the regional and global player.
Its chief executive officer, Hood Osman, said forty years had taught the
company a lot.
He said the company has managed to weather the economic slowdowns within the
four decades and had moved from a single-business entity to two and now to six.
"We have diversified our assets and expanded linkages to our services and
hopefully will become a regional player and a world class player soon," he told
Bernama in a teleconference from Kuala Lumpur.
Hood said KNB started operation in 1971 with the introduction of
containerisation.
"We started as a haulage company. Later we initiated our freight forwarding
company. Basically, for the past forty years our operations are based on these
core businesses.
"What we have done in 2009 is basically that we have expanded the industry
in order to be a more holistic integrated service provider," he said.
Hood said when the company started operations, it had only one prime mover
with three trailers and the first office was located in Johor Bahru.
KNB started operations in 1971 when containerisation was introduced
in Malaysia.
Now after 40 years, the company has expanded from just a container haulier
to become an international freight-forwarding, warehousing and distribution
group.
Currently, NKB employs 1,400 people, operates 400 prime movers, 3,200
trailers and 70 trucks, and transports about 270,000 twenty-foot equivalent
units of cargo a year, making it among the top five container hauliers in the
country.
Like its sister company, Northport Malaysia Bhd, it is a subsidiary of Bursa
Malaysia-listed NCB Holdings, which is part of the PNB group.
Hood said to be successful, Kontena Nasional has to expand and offer quality
service.
He said one ambitious direction he was taking the company was the provision
of third-party logistics, known in the industry as 3PL.
"Throughout the years, Kontena Nasional has managed to expand and overcome
the economic challenges. The backing from the group's chairman and members of
the board has enable the company to prosper within the short period of time," he
said.
