NO "BLOOD BIRD'S NEST" PRODUCTION IN MALAYSIA, SAYS DEPT

BEIJING, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The secretary-general of the Malaysian
Department of Veterinary Services Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin said on Friday the Malaysian swiftlet industry does not produce the "blood bird's nest."

He said, the bird nests produced in Malaysia are white in colour.

Abdul Aziz explained that although there might be some natural red-coloured bird nests, they are caused by the environment.

Malaysia is the only Asean country which has developed a comprehensive guideline for the swiftlet industry to ensure safety and quality, Abdul Aziz said.

He was speaking at a news conference here in response to reports alleging that contaminated blood bird's nests, found by quality watchdog in east China's Zhejiang province recently, were imported from Malaysia.

The reports have negatively impacted the Malaysian swiftlet industry, one of the country's revenue-generating industry.

Malaysian Ambassador to China Iskandar Sarudin, Counselor of Agriculture Md Sufian Yek and two other senior officers of the department, Dr Mohd Noor Hisham and Azizon Abdullah, as well as representatives of swiftlet industry were also at the press conference.

They are here as part of the three-day mission sent by the Malaysian Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry from Thursday to explain about Malaysia's swiftlet industry to China's quality authorities in the wake of the reports.
