SOMALIA BOUND HUMANITARIAN MISSION TO USE CHARLIE C-130 AIRCRAFT
SOMALIA BOUND HUMANITARIAN MISSION TO USE CHARLIE C-130 AIRCRAFT
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The IMalaysia Putra Club will be using a military aircraft, Charlie C-130, for its humanitarian mission to Somalia this Sunday.
Club President Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said he had sought the help of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the Ministry of Defence to use the military aircraft for the mission that is aimed at helping the people of Somalia who are facing famine.
He said the special flight to Somalia using Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Air Asia was called off.
"This was because no insurance companies were willing to take up the insurance overage for the flight," he told reporters after receiving RM260,000 (US$87,102) worth of medical products contributed by Pharmaniaga Bhd, for the mission here on Friday.
Abdul Azeez said 30 tonnes of foodstuff and 10 tonnes of medical products would be taken to Somalia while another 250 tonnes of food supply would be purchased in Dubai and Mogadishu.
Abdul Azeez said to date, the 89-member mission comprised doctors,
volunteers and media representatives.
He said on the average, 217,000 Somalian children died every three weeks and it was hoped the aid would help reduce the mortality rate.
Abdul Azeez said with the cooperation of the Association for Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti), the Club was planning to bring some Somalian orphans to Malaysia.
