WWF-MALAYSIA DISCOVERS TIGER SNARES

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The World Wide Fund for Nature
(WWF)-Malaysia has discovered fresh snares set for tigers not far from the East-West Highway.

The discovery came less than a month after the release of a documentary which highlighted the severity of the poaching and illegal wildlife trade in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex, in Malaysia's northern state of Perak.

"Since early August, 12 snares have been detected and deactivated by our monitoring team, with even more expected to be found in the area," WWF-Malaysia chief executive officer and executive director Dr Dionysius Sharma said in a statement on Friday.

Sharma said based on the sizes and types of snares, it was clear that poachers were targeting large mammals such as tigers.

Under the new Wildlife Conversation Act 2010, any person who sets or uses any snare for the purpose of hunting is liable to a fine of between RM50,000 (US$16,750) and RM100,000 (US$33,500) and to a jail term of up to two years.
